Yesterday, I saw "Drive", the last great movie directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.
It's a neo-noir story in Los Angeles and a neon-lit crime movie with a lot of visual effects.
Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, a Hollywood stunt performer, and a mechanic who also moonlights as a getaway wheelman for criminals after their heists. He's also a human hero who wears a vintage jacket with a scorpion on the back.
He falls in love with Carey Mulligan, his cute next door neighbor, and develops a relationship with her son. He trys to protect them from bad guys but the situation will go wrong.
I love the extremely slow rythme and the aesthetic quality of each shot, it makes me think to Sofia Coppola's style. The combination of car-thrills, an excellent synth-pop soundtrack, great performances and the juxtaposition of beauty and shocking violence, ensure that Drive will become an instant cult-classic.
